Fired Pickens Police officer Michael McClatchy waits to read a statement at his lawyer's office in Anderson, S.C. on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012. McClatchy said he thinks he was fired because city officials were angry he gave Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney a speeding ticket for going 63 mph in a 35 mph zone. City officials have said that McClatchy was fired because he used a police department computer to post his version of events on a message board for South Carolina fans. (AP Photo/Jeffrey Collins)

ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) -- A local police officer claimed Thursday that he was fired for giving a speeding ticket to a popular college football coach - fighting words in a state that takes its sports rivalries very seriously.
